My Adoption Story

Sadly, we're not real sure of the adoptees DOB. Above is what we have been told on some occasions. We think it was a boy but are not 100 percent sure. My mom and aunt were pregnant at the same time. The baby was born between the late sixties or early seventies. My aunt was married to Grady Chaney at the time. He is not the father. The father is said to be Reid Baker of Bartow, Florida at the time. Grady Chaney took the baby and handled all the paper work from what we're told. My aunt never saw the baby. The adoption is thought to have been handled by Children's Home Society of Lakeland, Florida.

Searching for Family

I am a maternal first cousin, assisting the half sister of the adoptee. I have taken Ancestry DNA test. Sadly a second cousin match is my closest match. Where do I go from here?

ADOPTION FAMILY FINDER'S RECOMMENDATION: Create a free account at www.Gedmatch.com then upload your raw DNA data from Ancestry.com. This will give you access to matches that have tested with the other two labs that may be willing to share info. Generally, people that upload to Gedmatch ARE more diligently searching for family. You can then transfer your raw data to FamilyTreeDNA for $39. giving you the luxury of two databases of test subjects. I am assuming that your mother and your aunt were sisters. If this is the case, you may want to add an mtDNA test from FamilyTree, which will test your maternal line going back many, many generations. Your first cousin, if they took this test would also appear appear, thus eliminating the paternal lines. It is an added expense but not absolutely necessary.

Reunion Goal

We would like to know if you had a good childhood. We'd like to know you're o.k. We'd like to share family medical history and other history. If you don't want contact, just knowing you're ok is enough. We'll be disappointed but will respect that. We would love to see a picture at least and know if you look like any of us.
